Army of Darkness Easter Egg - They're Called "Shemps" for a Reason

Ever notice that the stuntmen in Raimi's films are referred to as "Fake Shemps"? Well, he has a great love for all things Stooges, so when Ash takes the Necrenomicon, all the skeleton arms start to do a classic 3 Stooges slap-and-poke routine with him. "I'm blind! I'm blind!". Edsel out.

Raimi used the term "Fake Shemp" for actors who hadn't anything to do or say in his films. Yes, he take it from "Three Stooges", because when Shemp Stooges was sick, the studio took other actors to replace him. Sam and his friends hads a lot of fun to find out this "Fake Shemps"....

Shemp Stooges? Shemps last name was Howard, not Stooges. He was Moe, Larry, and Curlys brother. All their last name was Howard. Plus, the reason Raimi uses the term "fake Shemps" is becuase Shemp died when they were filming a stooge short film, so for the scenes remaining involving Shemp, they shot an anctor with a Shemp wig on from the back. Hence, he was a "fake Shemp."

Moe, Shemp, and Curley were all brothers. Larry wasn't related to the three.

Correct; Larry was a "Fine". And while we're at it, Joe was a "Besser" and Curley-Joe was a "DeRita".

You guys are crazy!, Why, I oughta... Moe and Larry Fine. These were the only two brothers. Moe wrote an autobiography... all is revealed about who's who. Not that it's much of a secret...

referring to Bruce Campbell and the Shemp thing, it is also mentioned in the credits in Darkman. At the very end Liam Neesons final disguise is Bruce Campbells face, and in the credits, they refer to him as "final shemp" (or last shemp, whatever)

Larry was not related to the Horwitz's. He was a Fienberg. Only Moe, Curly, and Shemp are related.

This is not entirely accurate. The term "Fake Shemp," while it was first coined by Sam Raimi, refers to how the Three Stooges used Shemp in the 1950's when they produced a slew of new, mostly derivative bits for Saturday morning television. It is true that Shemp was very sickly toward the end of his life (he died in 1955), but the Stooges did not get new actors to fill in for him. Rather, they used old footage of Shemp and edited it into the new material. Nobody could tell that when Larry threw a pie at Shemp, he was hitting a Shemp from 1946. So a Fake Shemp is actually an actor from another movie edited into a new movie to make it look like he is starring in that film. (Source: Cineaste)
