Star Trek: First Contact Easter Egg - Tribute to 2001: A Space Odysey

In "ST: First Contact" where Picard and Worf do an EVA to disconnect the big dish (keeping the Borg from contacting the Collective) Picard must enter a sequence of commands into the control unit. For a brief moment the unit shows it to be an "AE-35". It was the AE-35 unit in 2001, which controlled the Discovery's Earth link dish, that HAL announces is failing and must be replaced. I think maybe the ST producers/writers remembered what controlled the dish in 2001 and created a small tribute.

Are you sure that that's what the UNIT was identified as, or was it a code for something?

Also remember that in 2001, they had to pull a handle out of the dish, more or less what they did to eject the dish in FC.

You can download an animation of the maglock control unit from http://lcarscom.net/animations.htm - it called "Maglock Portal Servo Control". If the animation is correct, the unit says "SUBSYS ID = MAGLOCK AE35". Cool!

To close the loop on this (with thanks to Doug) check out the following sound clip of HAL announcing the fault in the AE-35 unit: http://www.fortunecity.com/lavender/tomatoes/968/2001/fault.wav We'll probably never know if the reference was intentional but it seems a stretch to be coincidence.
