McCaffrey, Anne Easter Egg - The Initials JG

Anne McCaffrey includes a character with the initials JG in each of her books. I read somewhere this was in honor of a good friend. The only ones I have been able to recognize so far is "Pegasus in Flight," there is a character named John Greene, who is refered to a JG a couple of times. The other one I have identified is pretty good. In "The Renegades of Pern" there is a character named Jayge. This is, of course, a way to spell out JG. I am currently rereading quite a few of her books in order to find more.

To quote from the woman herself: "Here is a picture of our very dear friend John Greene, who was killed one evening in Orange, France. He was sergeant in the French Legion and his murder has never been solved. So to give him a life because his was cut short, he has appeared in every book I've written since, using variations of his name and nicknames, which were The Fist of Bray, Golly Greene, and JG. You'd know him better a Jayge in Renegades and Gollee in The Rowan Series, and various other manifestations. See if you can figure out who he is in the books I haven't mentioned: starting with Renegades. "

Anne has a John Greene in almost every single book she has writen. I heard that it was in memery on a good friend of that same name who died several years ago.

There is a Johnnie Green in Power Lines, and I am sure there are others who pop in as incidental characters in the other books.

'Renegades' was dedicated to John Greene, and I believe it was being written at the time that he died. In addition to those already mentioned, there is a Jon Green in the Doona series (Crisis on Doona, I think), and another one in the Freedom series and the Talent series (Pegasus in Flight/Pegasus in Space), although I'm not sure on the precise form of the name in either of those. If my memory does not fail me then there are also John Greenes in various incarnations of the name in the Sassinak books, and I think one might appear in the ship books though I'm not sure. Does anyone know about that, or think of a series that I skipped?

Anne McCaffrey also has a JG character in the beginning Pern books. Also the Crystal singers books, with Killashandra. The only book that I've found that doesn't have one is one of her first books, Coelura. An interesting idea is proposed in that one, the story line wasn't developed well enough, but then I love all of her books. You know, I thought that I was the only one who noticed the JG phenomenon. Oh well. Now I know what it came from.

There was a Johnny Greene featured in Freedom's Landing. There was also a Johnny Greene featured in "The Dolphin's Bell" in The Chronicles of Pern. The latter enters that story kind of strangely, at least to me. He literally bursts in saying, "Don't ever say 'it can't be done' in my prescence!", then everyone perks up because they were in a tough situation. I remember reading that and thinking it was kinda weird, like Anne was trying to subliminally tell us something about her mentioning JG in the story. Maybe someone told her she couldn't put anymore JGs in her latter day Pern books after Renegades because no one has last names on modern-day Pern. Or maybe it's just me?

The JG in Freedom's Landing is Jay Greene, not Johnny Greene as stated above.

Okay, I read To Ride Pegasus and I don't remember if there was anyone with the initials JG nor a John Greene. Definitely not a John Greene but I'm sure there was a person in there with JG. I sure as heck can't find it.
