Pulp Fiction Easter Egg - Kill Zed

In the scene when Bruce Wills' character Butch has escaped from the custody of the crazy pawn shop owner and police officer and is planning on leaving the store there is a neon sign in the background. The sign is for Killians Irish Red beer but some of the letters have burned out. The only letters remaining are KILL and ED. If you add the Z from the police officers motorcycle keychain the message is KILL ZED. Zed of course is the police officers name. And as we all know, "Zeds dead baby, Zeds dead."

Surely the 'joke' is just that the remaining letters spell 'killed' ... as in 'Zed has been killed'. They do something similar in Batman Returns when Selina Kyle first becomes Catwoman. She smashes letters on her 'hello there' neon sign, so it now reads 'hell here'.

'Zed' was a security guard, not a police officer...just for future reference. :)

Someone needs to explain to me why you can just arbitrarily "add the Z from the key chain" just to suit this easter egg. It is not as if they show the key chain in the same shot as the Killians sign.
