The guitarist who the three men pick after just having sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads is called Tommy Johnson. When the four men are around the fire, Tommy is playing a song named 'Hard Time, Killing Floor Blues'. This was written by Skip James who was taught to play by the real life Thomas Johnson.

I thought that the reference was to Robert Johnson, who was said to have sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads.. and the guy singing "Hard Time Killing Floor Blues" is Chris Thomas King, who is quite talented, if I do say so myself.
