Half-Life 2 Easter Egg - "Back to the Future" Reference

In the first level of Half-Life 2, one of the Overwatch security guards asks you to follow him. Follow him into the room and he'll take off his mask and you'll see that it's Barney Calhoun. Dr. Kleiner will then come on the screen. When Barney says "Look who's here," the professor says "Great Scott! It's Gordon Freeman!" Notice that when he says "Great Scott!" he says it the same way Doctor Brown said it in all three "Back to the Future" films.

Another reference to the film is the box of plutonium under Kleiner's desk. Like Back to the Future, the box is yellow and looks just like the one from the movie.

What? Dr. Kliener does NOT look like Dr. Brown! Brown has crazy hair! It is a pure coinkydink.

Well, both Brown and Kleiner are old people with grey/white hair, who are working on strange new forms of travel (One transportation, one time), and say "Great Scott!". Seems to be a little more than coincidence.

The second time you appear in Kleiners lab, check out the graph print by the p.c. It shows a mock up of the 'WOW' signal by Dr Jerry Ehman. He wrote this on a print of a signal received during searches for alien signals on 15th August 1977. Unfortunately, the signal was never received again, so it may not have been Vortigon/ Combine but may have been from an even stranger civilisation such as Wales.

"Great Scott" really is an old phrase. I'm not sure where it was first used (by the Scottish?) but it's been said many times in history. I guess it was a way for some to express excitement or shock without using bad language. Although it sounds corney, if you got kids around or just in public, it's a more respectful way to express such excitement. Other words would be, "Dang" "Ooops" "crap" (debatable. Some might think Crap is a bad word) etc..

Actually, there is two references to Back to the Future in this game. The first is the already mentioned "Great Scott", but the other is the box of plutonium under Kleiner's desk. Like Back to the Furture, the box is yellow and looks just like the one from the movie. I've uploaded a picture of it.

Too bad that Go-Cart type car you get in Highway 17 doesn't go anywhere near 88mph

His name is not Barney Calhoun. The name Calhoun came from the Half-life mod "Blue Shift" and his name wasn't barney Calhoun it was something else.
