Royal Tenenbaums Easter Egg - Hidden Reference

The scene on the boat was filmed on KINGS POINTER, the training ship of the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point. In the movie, next to the hatch is a chalkboard, on it are the letters "KPS". This a reference found all over the world (in bars, restaurants, ports, bathrooms, brothels, you name it) where Kings Point graduates find themselves sailing. It stands for "Kings Point Sucks". A midshipman acting as an extra put it in the movie. Or so the story goes...
