Super Mario World Easter Egg - Something Special

If you haven't opened the Special world yet, open it. First of all, look at the icon at the top. for those who don't know, that's the symbol for the Super Famicom. (the Japanese version of the SNES)
Second, wait until the music repeats about 8 times. The music will suddenly change to a caribbean version of the theme song from the original Super Mario Bros.

Knucklehead is not as crazy as you guys think. This easter egg takes a long time to get to. First, you have to unlock the secret Star in the center of Star Road (I forget how, it's been sooooooo long ago that I completed the game. Just search the net to find out how to do this). Now, go to the secret star and enter it like you normally would (press X, Y A, or B). Now you are in a secret world that has very interesting Level Names ("Gnarly", "Tubular", "Way Cool", "Awesome", "Groovy", "Mondo", "Outrageous", and "Funky") Right away you will notice the word SPECIAL in big flashing letters. Above the word SPECIAL is a symbol that kinda looks like a multicolored flower. It is the logo for the European version of the SNES called Super Famicom. If you wait a while, the background music will change to the "Carribean" style Mario music. I think this is the same music from another Mario Bro's game, possibly number 3.

If you beat all the secret levels and take the start road at the end, the turtles wear Mario masks, the colors get screwed up, and the little bullets turn into pigeons (fun). This is hard to do though, although Tubular is the hardest of the specials.

wow. from what I've read, I can see that not many people knew about this secret world. I have had this game for YEARS and I always knew about it, I think since I got it. I did find the Special area (like the guy above me, I have forgotten how). The levels are TOUGH! They took me and my cousin months of game overs to finish the 8 or 10 levels. When you finish the special world, the entire game changes. The entire game looks like it takes place in the fall. Everything is orange, brown and dead looking. Its pretty cool. I have only passed the special area once, and my sister deleted it. My SNES doesn't work anymore, but i do have the emulator version and i still play. I think getting to the special area and beating is worth it for sure!

To beat the center level in star road, you need a blue yoshi and a non red turtle shell. A cape helps, since yoshi can fly by holding the jump button, rather than having to tap it. Go to the pswitch and carefully spit out the shell (press down). Hit the question block and press right, so the coin line goes right. Wait for the music to stop. Then swallow the turtle shell by pressing y and hold y so you can run. Then hit the switch and run to the end of the switched coins. Carefully spit out the shell and swallow it again (the same way you did before). Then keep flying up and right until you see the key hole. Tada! To beat tubular, the trick is to delay getting the balloons for as long as possible. That way, you have plenty of time to deal with the chucks near the end (the football players). Carefully go beneath the bottom one and hit the block. Be careful getting that last balloon, since the remaining chuck always kills me with a foot ball at this part. After that, it's pretty much done. Another hard level in the special area is the forest one (I don't know the name). Try to beat it the fair way a couple times, and then when you get frustrated, bring a yoshi and a cape with you. Eat the caterpillar at the beginning, then fly all the way through the level. OK, so maybe that isn't all that helpful. You should beat the entire game before beating the special levels. Beating the special levels makes the ending a little different, since the enemies in the ending look funny and have different names.

The easier way to beat the last star level is to bring a blue Yoshi and a couple of capes, grab a green shell at the beginning, fly to the three block area, re-charge (press down while spitting out the egg, and then eat it again) and fly all the way to the next solid ground, re-charge, fly straight up to to colored block area and then all the way to the right until you see the key and hole, at which point there will be a small opening which you can go through. the rest is self-explanatory.

Super Mario is cool but the special is hard to do. You have to find all the keys in the star levels. Tubular & Outrageous is hard to get pass. The world map will turn to a pink color & shell men will have Mario mast on them. The things that jump in to the air will look like a skull head. Super Mario special is somthing you have to try for your self.

It seems that all of you find tubular hard....well I found a trick! As you move to the right, hold down left at the same time. You will go about 5 times faster, and you can zoom to the end on your first balloon! Cool huh?

After beating the hidden star shaped area with all of the Yoshis, you go into a dark sky. Each level in this area is a star. The object in the upper right hand corner is the logo for the famicom and super famicom (Japanese equivalents of the NES and SNES, respectively). This is the "star road," the same star road who's stars get sent to earth in Super Mario RPG. The levels have cool names. If you bet the star road, you get sent back to the regular game, but many things are different. The backgrounds are changed to make it look like fall, the koopas wear Mario masks instead of shells, bullet bills are black birds, and piranha plants are jack-o-lanterns. The game play is the same, as are the level structures. Because of the theme, I call this "Halloween Mario World."

Beat the game w/Bowser (preferably using back-door which is easier) AFTER you beat all the star world SPECIAL levels and go to the Star Road 7. It will show you the "real" names of the edited characters (Flying Pumpkin Plant, or something like that, Pidget Bill, Mario Koopas, I think, etc.)

A different method of getting to Special is by having ONLY a cape. If you have Yoshi, dismount him, then push him to the left until he is completely off the screen. Continue to the platform (by spin-jumping so you don't lose your cape) with the switch block on one of the three revolving blocks, then hit the prize block and direct the coins a little bit up so you don't hit the revolving blocks or switch block and then to the left until the "switch block" music stops. Hit the switch block, then run left, then right on the platform of blocks you just made, then jump. Stay up, making sure you are still on the screen. Luigi is best for this, as Mario doesn't stay up well. Land on the platform with the exclamation blocks, then run. Drop down to the next platform and duck, but keep holding the run button. (I think it's X, but I am not sure because I play the Gameboy Advance version.) If all is planned well, you should slide under the stone block by the pipe. Keep doing this until you get to the area with the key and keyhole that leads to Special. I find this an easier way to get there than using the same Blue Yoshi-saliva covered shell to fly to the key and keyhole.

In the Funky level, (you will need Yoshi for this) wait for the time to get to 99 and then let yoshi eat a green fruit which adds 20 to the time remaining. Let the time drop to 99 again and eat another fruit. Let the time drop to 99 again and eat another fruit. Let the time drop to 99 again and eat another fruit. Let the time drop to 99 again and eat another fruit. Let the time drop to 99 again and eat another fruit. Keep doing this until there are no more green fruit in the level. Each time the time drops to 99, the music goes faster.

There's also the top secret level that gives you a feather, back-up feather and Yoshi, and then infinite lives once you get Yoshi. To get to it you must go to the non-secret Ghost house on Donut Island and find the secret exit (I forget how to get to it, I get confused with the other Donut Ghost House). One thing I can't get is the Fortress and Secret Back Enterence in Bowser's world, how?

In responce to your question, BuckeY, about the three levels you missed. Two of those levels are not real. They are just tests packed in the game. You can't find them normally, and you probably can't get it with game genie. As for the other level, thats the special DEBUG LEVEL. It's entrence is above the star to the SPECIAL ZONE, but it's hidden and you can't select it. There IS a game genie code for that tho.

Teal'c: The way to get to the secret area screen (which has two fireflower blocks, two feather blocks, and one yoshi/extra life; its map name is TOP SECRET AREA) is to go to that ghost house at the top left corner of the map with a cape. Move a few screens to the right (watch for ghosts). Now run all the way back to the left and jump before you hit the edge of the level. You will fly to the top of the screen to a secret platform. Get on the platform and run all the way to the right. Drop down and enter the door. Jump through the tape and TOP SECRET AREA will be revealed. It's a great way to get extra lives. The sad thing is that I'm such a dork, I haven't played the game for years but I still remember this perfectly.

The song that plays here is the original Super Mario Bros theme. Tip for the first level: Take Yoshi as close to the rope as possible, and when the blue Koopa comes up to it, eat him right through the rope. Now just fly through. :)

The easiest way to beat tubular in my opinion is to get a cape and a blue yoshi. Hit the p-switch and jump on a few ? blocks until you get to an array of brown blocks the p-switch created. then have yoshi grab one of the shells from the flying koopas there and then just fly under everything all the way to the end.

Hey guys, is it true that if you're using the GBA version, you must beat all of the levels in the game before the pallete swap/halloween theme occurs? According to Mariowiki, "In the SNES game, beating the Special World will change the graphics of some enemies to a fall theme. In the remake, one must beat every level in the game one time."

I know I beat super mario world with 98 percent before, I also beat it with 97, and of course 96, I also beat it with 100 percent one time with a star by the 100 percent at the beggining of game. There are a few secrets that have not been mentioned. 1st the lazor suit does exist, but you have to have the game genie to unlock that level.2ndifyou start 3 different saved games and beat them all 96 w/ a star, then they will let you play the intro level. Also game genie will let you play the test level. The last secret that im sure no one heard of is......the baby yoshi's....you need to bring the baby yoshi's to the key hole with you(this is extremly hard because they like to eat to get big, dont let them eat, keep them small)get all 5 baby yoshi's in star world to the key hole in the level without letting them become big and use key with them right were you use the key. This will allow the baby yoshi's to be in the very first level of game yoshi's house. This will allow you to unlock another level in secret area. So there will be 2 secret levels inside the 1st secret level. One is the lazor suit and you need the game genie. 2nd secret is the level but you have to do the star world baby yoshi's in key first....there is more to it than that but that will give you 100.(you can also save with game genie which will give you 98 percent from lazor suit level....100 percent will be from the baby yoshi's in the key in star worlds...this is very hard to do to get them there without letting them get big)

The laser suit level does not exist. This is an excellent fake created with a program called Lunar Magic. Nintendo did not make this!!! Also, I tried the "baby yoshi to keyhole crap" and it did not work. Sorry!
