Matrix, The Easter Egg - Presidents in the Matrix

After Cypher betrays his friends, he tells the agent that he wishes to come back as someone famous, an actor, he wants to be powerful, and he wants to remember nothing. Now, the agent calls Cypher Mr. Reagan, so Cypher could be Ronald Reagan. He was famous, an actor, was very powerful and since he has Alzheimers, he can't remember anything.

Kwittewitty is so right about Cypher's real name is Mr.Reagan. He's called that by the agents before he tell them he wants to be a Star. But maybe the name has a point anyway... as every other name in the movie seems to have a point.

Perhaps, because the Matrix obviously isn't realtime, the fact that Neo was brought out of the Matrix, and therefore caused Cypher's (or Reagans) death meant that so called "history" of the Matrix was altered, and in that particular reality, Reagan never existed... complicated, but philosophical, no?

sorry to dissapoint u, but Cypher didnt die. He killed the other two people by pulling their plugs while they were in the Matrix and then he killed one of the normal born people who work in the ship. That would be 3 people. In one part of the movie they show 3 bodies covered with cloth. If indeed Cypher was dead, there would be 4 corpses, not 3!

I'll have to disappoint you now too LeftyLegs. It's rather obvious that Cypher is dead. Anyway, where was he if he didn't die. He couldn't have got out the ship. Also the crew would have wrapped the bodies in cloth probably as a sign of respect. So it is obvious then tat they wouldn't show any respect to the person who had killed Dozer, Switch and whoever else was killed (was it Mouse?).

I think more than four people died. Mouse was gunned down the police. Then Dozer (or was it Tank?) was gunned down by Cypher. Then Cypher pulled the plug on Switch and Apoc. So, by my count that's five dead.

Actually Cypher died from Tank shooting him becuase Tank wasn't dead after Cypher shot him, he was just wounded and on the ground for a while but then he got back up and shot Cypher, and I believe 5 people did die because Mouse, Apoc, Switch, Cypher, and Dozer all died.

I just wanted to make a comment on how Cypher died... When Tank zapped him, he flew back into the pipeworks and tubings of the Nebuchannezard. (Spell much?) Kinda like in ALIEN when the alien was lurking in there at the end... but anyways. I believe (now that I think about it) that Cypher was temporarily forgotten during the chaos and was left there. During another chaotic moment, after he had time to regain strength (say, when the Sentinels we prying open the ship) that he escaped and made his way towards a hatchery. Cypher may live!! --MUSH

The original script for the movie actually says Cypher dies. The movie was supposed to be a little more bloody than it turned out to be. Supposedly, Tank first shot Cypher on one knee, severing his leg, and then on his head, making it explode. Nice stuff, huh?

Cypher is called "Mr. Reagan" by Smith. Cypher says "I don't wanna remember nothing." Ronald Reagan notoriously said "I don't remember" during the Iran-Contra scandal (covert operations.) Cypher says, "I wanna be rich, you know, someone important. Like an actor." Ronald Reagan was an actor before he was President. Cypher has traits of Satan. Ronald Wilson Reagan was referred to by some as Satan, there are 6 letters in each of his 3 names, 666. Cypher wishes to live a life of material decadence. Ronald Reagan presided over an era remembered for decadence, greed, and deceit. And to those people who claimed that this was impossible due to the fact that Cypher allegedly "died" and Ronald Reagan is still alive, please remember that The Matrix is filled with references to religion, history, politics and society in general. Just because Cypher possibly represents Reagan, doesn't mean he has to live and die exactly the same way.

to Lozer... The Messiah thing is common knowledge, yes Neo is their savior digitally speaking, (Their own personal Jesus Christ) However Trinity is not because of his 3 day resurrection. In the New Testament we discover that God exists in 3 different forms at once, none of which are any less Him. We have come to abbreviate this as the Trinity. You may have heard of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (By the way the Old Testament has TONS of Easter Eggs from God on that subject. "Let us make man in OUR image" etc.) But what IS interesting in the Matrix is whenever Neo says "God!" Trinity says "What?" which is easy to miss cause we'd often react that way when someone exclaims something. Foch

you know, when i heard the 'mr. reagan' i thought of ronald because of the actor and powerful and thought it was funny. i didnt even think about alzhiemers and not remembering anything, but that makes it even funnier, whether it was intentional or not. as for the comparison to the trinity: toward the end, i kind of thought of neo as jesus (obvious), tank as god(he watches and helps from outside the matrix), thus trinity would be the holy spirit (i had also considered the idea of the oracle being the holy spirit, but at the end when it is the three trying to save morpheus, trinity as the third makes more sense), and morpheus is man needing to be saved. please put in your own ideas on this, i would like to hear support for this or other views on this :)

Okay, everybody, here's what I think as an intelligent person: 1) Louis Cipher could be Lou Cipher or Lucifer--I like that analysis. However, this character seems to be more of a Judas character if we are to stick with the Biblical references (honestly, I'm surprised no one mentioned this yet). He delivers his leader into the hands of the enemy (just like Judas), he receives a meal and a new life (one could presume this would be comparable to gold coin in the morbid real world), and I bet there are more references (I'll keep looking). 2) The Ronald Reagan reference seems a little far stretched, but I'll buy it because it's funny. 3) Also, I like the Neo, Trinity, and Tank as the Holy Trinity correlation. Neo is Jesus (the new or "neo" savior), Tank is God the Father overseeing everyone and delivering them from evil (the agents and the matrix), finally, Trinity is the Holy Spirit. Ultimately, it is her unconditional love for Neo that resurrects him. This makes sense to me.

First of all I must say that I'm addicted to this movie and love analyzing it. So here what I found about the names in the movie: First) Neo: anagram for One (ok, it's well-known!) Second) Morpheus: here in Greece, about 2500 years ago was the god who controled dreams. Just what Fishburne did with Mr. Anderson in the movie. Third) Trinity: According to the holy bible the woman has 3 hypostasis. .Friend: Helping Neo when in the Matrix to save Morpheus ..Girl friend: When she was in love with him and assured the prophecy ...Mother: When after admitting her passion "gave birth to him" once again....

The reference to Ronald Reagan was either a coincidence or an inside joke, because Reagan was an actor and president before the Matrix would have been formed. Morpheus tells Neo that he thought it was 1999, but it was really 2199 (or something like that), and that the Matrix was formed at the end of the millenium when the world came together to celebrate, AI was invented, machines took over and so on.

In reference to the whole Biblical Allegory thing: My parents saw biblical allegory in The Dark Crystal and Star Wars. I can look at The Matrix and see Wiccan allegory, such as the woman Trinity. Being that she is female, she is then the embodiment of the Threefold Goddess. In addition, Morpheus is a pagan god--and OMG there's suddenly a link with the Sandman comic series, because Dream was Morpheus! I think this is all an allegory to seeing the shape of a dog in the clouds.

Neo is the One: the Saviour/the Christ. Where there is a Christ, there must be an AntiChrist (and vice-versa). Ronald(6 letters) Wilson(6) Reagan(6) was the real prophesied "1st Beast whose actions were the opposite of the Christ, he was ruler of the world, lied to all nations, and was wounded yet lived". United[6] States[6] Dollar[6] is the "mark of the Beast that everyone must have to buy and sell with" - The Revelation Chapter 13.) Neo/One, God all have 3 letters representing Holy Trinity.
