Ferris Bueller's Day Off Easter Egg - Fictional Town

Okay, most of John Hughes films about teenagers take place in the fictional town of Shermer, Illinois. Ferris Bueller's Day Off obviously doesn't. It takes place in Chicago. But Hughes still puts the name Shermer in the movie. In the very first shot of the police station we see a badge with the name Shermer on it. It is safe to say that this is a reference to Shermer, Illinois, since Shermer is not a very common name.

Although there is no City/Town of Shermer, There is a very main road called Shermer that runs right by the High School that was filmed at. (Glenbrook North High)

John Hughes graduated from Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, IL. However, Northbrook's original name was Shermerville, hence the name of the street, and, I suspect, the name of the town in the movie. Incidentally, the name was changed because "Shermerville" was synonymous with bootleg booze and speakeasys during Prohibition.

actually, Ferris Bueller's day off does take place at shermer highschool, in one of the scenes where the high school students are walking down the hallway, for a split second, you can see a poster on the wall that says "go shermer high"(or something to that effect) on it

DOGMA COMMENT ABOUT SHERMER: Jay and Silent Bob had gone to Illinois to become the pot connection for Shermer. They figured they'd make a fortune based upon the attitudes of the characters they had seen in the Hughes movies. (Silent Bob rents the movies over and over) This was the reason for them being in the city where Bethany, the woman they rescued from the whacked-out street hockey demons happened to be. They were trying to make their way home after discovering there was no Shermer.
