The second car that Duke rents, the Red Shark, is actually owned by Hunter S. Thompson and was driven from Aspen to the shooting of the film in Las Vegas.

The red car used by Johnny Depp in the movie WAS the original car used by Hunter S Thompson in real life. They were allowed to borrow the car in real life. Johnny Depp studied the role very well and I believe he used various other belongings of Hunter S Thompson.
