Excel Easter Egg - Excel 97 Flight to Credits

1. On a new Worksheet, Press F5
2. Type X97:L97 and hit enter
3. Press the tab key
4. Hold Ctrl-Shift
5. Click on the Chart Wizard toolbar button
6. Use mouse to fly around - Right button forward/ Left button reverse

N.B. You need to have direct draw installed for this egg. If you don't, you'll get the message: "This would be much more interesting if you were running with DirectDraw. But you're not, so this will have to suffice", and the credits will appear.

Pretty kewl. A little bit dark and takes some getting used to. If you really like the movement of it and would be into a game that is similar, try Magic Carpet. The graphics are fun and it's an interesting game. Good with a joystick.

This is so cool...fly around the purple landscape until you get to a grey area. That's where the "credit mountain" is. They're scrolling on one side of the mountain.

For those who are hard of reading; for better control in flight remember to use an equal number of clicks on the right and left mouse buttons to slow down or stop, as they cancel each other out.

There is also a lake of "water" where the purple land bobs up and down kinda like ripples. You have to fly low to the ground and it is near one of the drop-offs of a cliff.

The speed is controlled by how long/often you click the left mouse button. The less you click it/hold it down, the slower you go. Try not to hold down the mousebutton, as this speeds the program up too much.

Likewise, read about it in TIME. Thank you TIME. For those of you who always miss the first few words, the message recurs once every 5 mins 55 secs. Or it could recur twice...I don't know, didn't stay around long enough to find out. The lake mentioned above is straight ahead after you've finished reading the message.

for Raye-chan and eggberta: it is giving you an error because your columns are numbered instead of alphabetized; therefore column X and L doesn't exist. Change your columns and try again.... cool egg!

To return quickly to the game from your Recent Documents folder on the Start menu, Save the spreadsheet as game_file.xls or whatever right after you've gotten to the 'press Tab once' step. (The 97th row should be selected with the highlight on the second column when you save) Quit Excel and go to Start, Documents, game_file.xls (or whatever.xls you named it) When the spreadsheet opens, the 97th row should still be highlighted - just hold Ctl-Shift and click the Chart button. When you quit the game and close the file, don't save any changes.

The Dialog preceding the credits (for Excel 97 in my case) is as follows: In The Beginning There Was Nothing... Then There Was Excel 97 Hmm.. Okay, Before That There Were Some Other Versions Of Excel And Some Nachos. But Nothing Else... And Excel 97 Did Calceth Thy Numbers And It Hath Plotteth Thy Data. And Lo, It Was Draggeth-And-Droppethed Into Thy Lesser Applications. And This Was Good And The World Was At Peace And Stuff. CREDITS

This is a great egg. I can find the lake and the credits, but I can't find the house yet or the robot. The only problem is that if there is someone who doesn't know this egg, it is a huge waste of space, because this egg probably takes up more space than Excel 97 itself with all the graphics and everything. But, other than that, it is a great egg.:)

Cool egg, BUT has anyone noticed that the good old Microsoft Programmers have got things backwards? Normal flight sims (like normal aeroplanes) bank right when turning left and vise versa. I found that after I did this once, it didn't work on the same spreadsheet again. so I just closed the whole program and it worked fine. I also found that if I did one unsuccessful attempt, then I would have to close the program and open it again for it to work. But you can still minimize this thing. And if you do, then its title is: [insert windows symbol] ??????? Now thats just funny.

So yeah, you HAVE to make sure that this is the absolute first thing you've done on Excel or it WILL NOT WORK - I've tested this. When you first open Excel, it's document1 and the first thing you do is punch in the code. I love it love it love it love it love it! (OK carried away... ^^;;

Two other ways to do this instead of X97:L97: 1) Hit F5 or click in the location box, and type in L97:X97, or 2) Click on L97 and select all the way to X97 All you really have to do is find a way to select from L97 to X97, and then afterwards you can just hit Tab, etc. Just make sure the white box is on M97 when you hit Tab.
