I Am the Cheese Easter Egg - Phone Home

Late in Robert Cormier's book, the narrator tries to telephone his girlfriend. The phone number listed as the girlfriend's number was, at the time the book was published, Cormier's own home phone number. When readers called the number and asked for the girl in the book, Cormier would identify himself as her father, and would discuss the book with the caller.

I loved this book--it's on my top ten list. I knew about this egg when I read it and almost called.

Robert Cormier visited my High School and spoke to my class. After he talked he was available for questions and autographs. He mentioned the phone number thing. At the time, 1984, he had his own daughter leave a message on an answering machine as though she were the girl. His personal line had long since been changed. He said he would answer messages left if the person left contact information.
