Get Fuzzy Comic Strip Easter Egg - Get Fuzzy Extras

Darby Conley constantly makes subtle references to several people and things in his comic strip, "Get Fuzzy." One of the many examples is the legendary (to some) guitarist Leo Kottke. If you look in the background of the strips, you will see Kottke videos underneath Rob's TV, Kottke posters on the walls, and Kottke CDs laying around. Among many other things to which Conley makes reference are his love of rugby (the shirts that Rob wears and various videos), Pink Floyd, Star Wars, the band Ween, and a place called Sprouts in Athens, Georgia. Still have to follow up on that one. Look around Rob's apartment sometime and check out all the cool things he has laying around. It's pretty interesting.

Darby also has Rob wearing a t-shirt from the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville, TN (distinctive flame logo). We Knoxvillians find that rather cool.

In at least one strip, Rob wears a shirt which says 6*9=42. This is a reference to the wonderful 5-book trilogy "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by the great Douglas Adams. If you haven't read at least some of this series, go check it out of your local library, I love it.

So, I did a little looking, and it turns out that Sprouts isn't a place in Athens, GA but a band called the Fuzzy Sprouts *from* Athens, GA. And, one of the members of the band (Tim Conley) is Darby's brother. If you go to www.fuzzysprouts.com and click on 'Tim's Homepage', you can download an mp3 of a 'Bucky B. Katt' (aka L.L. Fool J.) themed song that Tim made for Darby. Also, in the links section there is a link to www.getfuzzy.com. -Miles Stoudenmire

I went to school in Athens, GA. There is an indie band in the area known as the Fuzzy Sprouts. As best as I can remember, Darbey COnley is the brother of one of the members of FUzzy Sprouts, thus Rob's shirt is a shout-out to the band. I think the name of the strip also came from the band.

I didnt know that get fuzzy was so big! I knew about Tim conleys band Fuzzy Sprouts and have seen them play before. I live Athens, Ga. I work in downtown Athens. I read a Get Fuzzy book once but, i thought it was printed locally. I remember i got off of work one day and i overheard a guy talk about writing a comic strip about a guy, a cat, and a dog. I didnt know it was Darby Conley. Its cool to know that so many people like this cartoon.

there was that whole frodo cat thing, plus on 2-1-03, rob's wearing a WETA shirt (i've checked the logo). there are tons of harry potter references. 6-22-01, rob reads the first book as a bed time story. from 12-27-01 on in, bucky has a slytherin poster on the inside of his closet door, but disappears during the "my crib, yo" plotline and i haven't seen it again so far. 3-3-02, a sunday color strip, rob's reading a harry potter hardcover (the paper wraparound cover is missing). it's the chamber of secrets, and he's on chapter fourteen. 9-5 and 9-7-01 had a thing where satchel finds out harry potter isn't real, 1-13-02 is where bucky uses satchel's harry potter doll as a voodoo doll against rob, 3-17-02 has two references, and 3-24-02 is where satchel redecorated his room and he has a hufflepuff poster up. a harry potter AND a get fuzzy fan. go me.

Have you noticed the patch on the front of the cap Rob often wears? The black one with a white fern leaf? That's the logo of the New Zealand All-Blacks Rugby Union...another tribute to Darby Conley's love for rugby.

in some strips, Conley inserts his name into a part of the strip, for example, instad of "darb" in a box, it will be in a book Rob is reading, or a cash register.

Lately, Rob's been living in Boston and they make a ton of references to the Red Sox vs. Yankees rivalry.

Ok, I loved "Get Fuzzy" anyway, but on Wed. 10/5/05, Darby Conley made it absolutely clear that he took Latin in high school at least, when the togate dog uttered "ULULAT," the onomatopoetic verb meaning "he howls" All my students noticed and brought it in for me.

I'm a reader in the GTA (Toronto) and I love Get Fuzzy. To all the Canadians out there, look for the Tim Horton's mug sitting on Rob's desk (which I believe Bucky knock off the table and breaks in a later panel). I don't remember the date of the strip but it's in the Get Fuzzy collection entitled "The Get Fuzzy Experience - Are you Bucksperienced". There are a lot of Tin Tin posters and tees in the strip as well. Till I saw them in Get Fuzzy, I didn't realise they were released in English. Well! Darby rocks!

Someone may have commented on this already, but it is actually Rob's dad Francis who was in the Marines. He was also a firefighter. You can see evidence of that in the comic during the days following 9/11/01.
