Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi Easter Egg - Klaatu Barada Nikto

This is a quote from an easter egg for the movie Army Of Darkness:

"In order to destroy the book of the dead, the hero must memorise and say the words "Klaatu barada nikto" This is a tribute to The Day the Earth Stood Still. In that movie the alien instructs the girl to memorise and say the codewords "Klaatu barada nikto" to stop the robot from attacking." submitted by Brendan ([email protected])

Klaatu, Barada & Nikto are also the name of 3 aliens on Jabba's sail barge.

Klaatu: Green face, brown "vest", shiny metal helmet (After Luke makes it to the top deck of Jabba's sail barge, he kills the Nikto with the large laser, and the very next alien that shoots at him is Klaatu.)

Barada: Green, pudgy face, white shirt, orange bandana. (Holding a long "staff" standing behind and to the left of chewbacca on the desert skiff, heading towards the sarlacc pit.)

Nikto: Orange face w/ smallish horns, brown helmet and "tunic". (Just before C-3PO gives Luke and company a last chance to "beg for mercy", there is a close-up of Lando's face in his guard disguise and Nikto is behind and to the left of Lando & also behind and to the right of Lando when Luke and lando exchange nods, just before the excitement begins.)

"Klaatu barada nikto" (I've seen different spellings over the years) actually comes form the sci-fi, cold war, classic, "The Day the Earth Stood Still." It is the command Mr. Carpenter (the alien) gives to his Robot assistant.

Klaatu Barada Nikto was also used in two episodes of "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: the TV Series", one of the two with the alien that married the daughter (can't think of her name), and the one with the mummy

As a side note, this is also a cheat in SimCity 2000, Network Edition. If you want to unlock everything, you open the "Chat" window and write "klatu verada nictu" and you will hear a man say "You must go to Gort, you must say these words, Klatu Barada Niktu". Then, the chat window says "Gort: I hear and obey." You will then have all the secrets in the game unlocked

Isn't it Evil Dead3 with the Book Of The Dead innit? The hero with the chainsaw arm forgets the words and tries to cough them out instead, then gives in and legs it with the book under one arm. Funny film. The boxed set trilogy is in a case shaped like a book made out of a human face.It's rubber and goes boing wen you poke it. disgusting.

The passage "GORT KLAATU BARADA NIKTO" also appears in the movie TRON. Twenty seven minutes into the movie Alan (TRON) returns to his cubical to wait for Flynn to forge a group 6 access so he can release his TRON program. The passage is posted on one of the walls of his cubical (left of screen).

The Origin of Klatu Burada Nikktu (with various spellings) is from a tribe in the Amazon rain forest. The producers of the film "The Day the Earth Stood Still" used this phrase as previously stated (in this egg) and it gained cult pop status well after the film opened in 1956. The phrase has been used in various subsequent films as an homage to the original film and an IN-Crowd trivia game. In the Amazon tribe, Klatu Barada Niktu is a dance where participants enter into a trance state repeating the name over and over again. The literal meaning of the three words remain a mystery.

klaatu Borada Nichto has been used in a number of movies. It is common, because Jewish writers are common. Sam Raimi for example. It is part of the kol nidre prayer, alliterated. It means "God give it over on this night.." referring to the world, and the jewish concept of God conquering all of creation.
