Max Payne Easter Egg - The Legendary Dopefish

This egg is in the level where you are chasing Gognitti across the rooftops
after bailing from the train. Also take note that you need to have the
-developer command in your shortcut when you start the game to access the
console.

When you make it to the basketball court, kill all the guys so they don't
bother you. Then look for a wall with a recessed area blocked by a
chain-link fence. There is a desert eagle at the bottom. Open up the
console and type jump10. When you press enter, use the movement keys to put
Max behind the fence down where the Desert Eagle is. Go through the door on
the left (if you're facing the wall) and go down the stairs and you'll find
some goodies, plus the poster that says "Dopefish Lives".

The Dopefish has appeared in Doom II, where you need to kill dopefishes to finish a hidden level as well as Wacky Wheels and The Tiny Toons Adventure (movie).

You can actually get there without cheating by getting to the end of the level where Cognitti is cornered. You must jump to the small out-cropping on the wall from the roof you are on when you see the cut-scene when Cognitti bangs on the door. It's near the satellite dish behind you. Jump across go through and you come out from the door under the stairs. There's a bunch Molotovs and a picture of dopefish. You can fall without getting hurt if you land on the fence from the fire escape.

There is a simpler way to do this which doesn't even involve the console. You have to do this when you're in the area to kill what's his name (the guy max is chasing). Stay out of the way of the guys shooting at you, and instead of going down the stairs, go the opposite way. There should be a sattelite dish there and the hidden area should be visible. Stand on the very edge of the ledge (past the dish), which should be raised a bit at that point and face the ledge below that sticks out, which is what you have to jump onto. You might want to quicksave because it takes a few tries to jump it right. Then go down and take the door on the left which leads into the hidden room. There's an exit which leads to below the stairs in that main courtyard bit, which isn't a bad place to exit from.

When you come to the basketball court, stand at the fence and wait for the car to come by. when it does shoot it and it will crash. The driver will then come out to kill you!

There's another hidden area in Part 1 of the game. In the mission in the hotel towards the end is an empty room with a piece of wood making a ramp up to the ceiling. There are two windows in the room, one of them is boarded up and you can smash through the wood and then edge along the window sill into a new room. In there is a dead man with a wooden stake in his heart who has written Buff... in blood. A reference to the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
