Zelda: Ocarina of Time Easter Egg - Play the Beta Quest

NOTE: The Legend Of Zelda, Ocarina of time is split up into 3 versions depending on updates of the game after it's release. They are as follows, with descriptions on how to tell what version you have.

Version 1.0: Almost all gold cartridge games. At the end of the game, Ganon throws up red blood.

Version 1.1: Very few of these. Where made on the last few gold cartride games. Ganon now throws up green blood, and the fire temple music is slightly different.

Version 1.2: Grey cartridges. If you bought a the game recently, it's this one.

(If you can't get the code to work for you, then try a different version of the code.)

What is the beta quest? It was discovered by Kuky Frope and his Gameshark hacking group. In it, you start off in a dark Hyrule Field, and hear Epona in the backround. You can't select pause, but all C buttons are functional (I think the items you can use are bombs, arrows, and the hookshot). You can walk around and explore, but sometimes when you try and enter an area, the game freezes. Anyways, i'd explain what happens when you go places, but i'll leave it out to see what happens.

It's not an actual side quest like in the original Zelda, it's just considered one becasue you can explore Hyrule. It is thought that the contet of the beta quest was used by Nintendo durring press confrences. Why though, Nintendo left the data in there is a mystery.

In order to preform the Beta Quest, you will need a gameshark V3.0 or higher. If you have one, then go into Zelda64, and enter in a new code:

(Note: Changing the 20 value in the codes to 21, 22, 23, etc, will give you different results. Experment around for awesome results E.G. Walking around in the title screen)

Version 1.0
801197E3-0020

Version 1.1
8011BBA3-0020

Version 1.2
8011C093-0020

Turn on the beta quest code, and start the game. If you entered the right code for your version of the game, youm will see the N64 logo, and then will start in Hyrule Field where the beta quest begins.

Have fun!

On the website Pikachu was so kind to share with us, you can see several screenshots of the forest medalion set to one of the C-buttons. If you recall, when you beat a temple, a dialog box pops up and says "You got the [insert temple name here] medalion! [Insert name for temple sage here] adds his/her power to yours!" However, you dont get any new abilities or skills. Perhaps the Nintendo people were going to let you use the medalions as items or spells or somthing, but it was taken out of the game. Who knows what was originaly put in there, but was then taken out? There could be a whole new item or skill hidden away among lines of useless coding, disconnected from the game.

If you combine it with other codes on the internet, you can actully get Link to walk around in alpha, untextured areas that the developers left in the game. There are also ways to get link to walk around in the kid's market as an adult, walk around in the title screen, walk with the goddesses (It's really weird), and a whole bunch of stuff.

About the game locking. Most of you should know about the N64 Disk Drive (DD) and the add-on disk for OoT that was only ever released in Japan. If you are ever able to get a DD unit and the add-on disk, you'd probably be able to play the full BETA quest since the cart technically is looking for the data for the extra level information which was not stored on the cart probably. This is, of course, my personal speculation since I don't have a DD myself. Also, I've heard that this BETA quest is really for young link to get the triforce since there is a Gameshark code for getting to it but touching the triforce locks them game (again, it's probably searching for non-existent data).

According to my own experience, the version of the game DOES NOT determine the color Ganondorf spews at the end of the fight. Everytime I've played, the color spewed is the same color as the tunic you're wearing at the time. The same thing happens in the Gerudo Fortress with the girl that gives you the membership card. Her lipstick and outfit match the color tunic you're wearing. Change your tunic, and her colors change as well.

Another difference I noticed (after playing OoT a dozen times) between versions 1.0 and 1.2 is a Hyrule Castle guard dying with his last words in the back alley of Hyrule Castle Town (after you get the Ocarina of Time and before you use it in the Temple of Time). I guess like the spooky Fire Temple music and Ganondorf's red blood, it was something that couldn't be in an E rated game and slipped by the ESRB when they rated version 1.0. (sarcasm) Cover your children's ears and eyes! They'll get nightmares! Blood and death and evil music, oh my! (/sarcasm)

first, I have researched this stuff for a long time and also found a few things for my self. for those of you who know about hte equippable medallions, I know what they may have been used for. the forest medallion used to be the wind medallion before miyamoto decided to take it out. I believe that it may have been used as a "farore's wind" type of object and also the same for a few other medallions. I have also found a beta weapon, for big zelda fans who have played the oldies, you know that you always started out with and old wooden sword up until the point of 'ocarina of time', well i was messing around with my Action Replay on the gamecube version and somehow got the deku stick in my B button and it also never broke, It must have been a weapon because it also replaced my Kokiri sword in the subscreen. while using the moonjump code in some houses and raising the camra above you, you can also jump through the bottom wall (bottom of the screen) and if you keep jumping and pushing the camra button, eventually you will come to an alpha version of the room you are in. (I have only tried this in Kokiri forest and dont know if it works anywhere else. another screenshot I found showed the use of a leaf as the instrument instead of the ocarina and the temple of time didn't exist yet. (they weren't going to put in a young link a first.) if you look down into the zora's domain water right as you get in (near round platform with zora on it) there is a doorway, if you get under the ice as an adult or find a way down there you can use the debug location finder to see that there is something behind the door but there is a missing line of script for where the door teleports you there. the last and wierdest thing i've ever done is (gameshark or action replay required) put on the "all quest Items" code and also get the ocarina of time. get to the river and jump over it and over the wall to get to the temple of time (prelude of light sometimes also works)when you go in you will sometimes see the spiritual stones sitting there but the door is closed (if this doesn't work the first time keep trying im looking for a place to send the pictures of this when I do I will post it) if you see this then stand in front and play the song of time like normal and the stones will dissapear, they will reapper at the end of the cutscene (they are sometimes in it) and then merge into one it looks really cool but the door doesn't open.

This is indeed a very spooky alteration of the game. What I think the code does is mess up the scripting/warping program, so that the script to run the title screen doesn't execute. It's not really a beta quest but you can access beta stuff with it.

I don't think this is something along the lines of a "beta quest". For what I've seen, it looks more like the cutscenes used in the story, such as the Great Deku Tree's explanation about the birth of Hyrule and such. I've been in Lon Lon Ranch where all of the characters were partying (as seen in the end of the game). The reason you end up in the wrong part of the game after zoning, is probably because the next part of the cutscene was taking part there. This is just a theory of mine, although it makes a lot of sense to me.

AngelicLies, it does. I saw a video on G4's Filter with Green Tunic wearing Link slashing at a red blooded Ganon. I have used the red tunic on the Master Quest and still have gotten green blood.

Well first off - The dying guard is in every version of the game, even the GCN versions. And secondly, what you people think are "alpha" textures in room with pre-drawn backgrounds is just the 3d geometry of the room, due to the fact that the textures didn't load properly. And there is certainly no way to get the triforce, not in Beta quest or anything else. It is possible to use a gameshark code to change the xyz coordinates of the triforce symbol in the temple of time, and there is a way to see the triforce on link's hand. That's it.

Yes reignoffire, something similar happened to me. I went into Zoras river but came out inside Jabu Jabu, where I got stuck in an endless abyss. Finally I floated back up and went to exit, but wound up on top of death mountain. I went down to kakariko village which was on fire (after water temple) but no sheik. I flew into the fire and my game froze. It seems the beta quest has a wierd super warp to it, that whisks you around Hyrule at a the speed of light.

Well I tried this little code and I went to lake hylia. when I went there the screen faded with a spinning triforce symbol. When the screen faded back in I was in the forest temple and I was at the boss door. I went through cause that was the only way I could go. It brought me out at the water temple. I went through the boss door in the water temple too. Also I was using the gameshark codes for levitation so I could go where I wanted to. After I entered the boss door I came out I ended up in the castle courtyard where malon is sleeping and you wake him up as young link. I levitated over the fence and went into the castle courtyard. I ended up coming out in between the happy mask shop and the potion shop in the market. Next I tried going to the temple of time and it put me in the fire temple with Darunia. I went out of the fire temple and I ended right back in the water temple. I guess it is just a big maze. Has this happened to anyone else. I have had people on gamefaqs.com tell me this has happened to them also.

Hmmm...very very weird. This is my theory. I heard once that Z64 would be released on the N64DD and a cart, but when the N64DD wasn't released over here, then Nintendo decided to take all the parts out that had to load from the disk. But seeing as the prgram code on the disk is needed to boot the game, they put the extra stuff on the cart and with a little Nintedo magic, made the cart work. This is just my observation, it may not be true. Also check out this page: http://www.zeldapower.com/z64beta.shtml. This is what Nintendo removed from the game, it looks like it's from the Japanese beta.

Very cool. I went into the well in Kakariko and ended up in the alley in the Market. I just wish there was a way to play as adult Link in the kid time and kid Link in the adult time.

This is an awesome code, but I think it's kind of old news now. Not that that makes it any less cool. ;) I own a Gameshark solely because I wanted to do this code, and I have tried it. I have the latest version of the game. I discovered a hidden area once, but the game froze and I had to reset and haven't found it again since. I'll post something about it as soon as I find out more. Also, regarding this code, there have been HIGHLY UNLIKELY rumors about the Triforce being obtained through use of this code. These are PROBABLY NOT TRUE. I wouldn't bother trying them, even. Although it tends to play the Triforce music sometimes in odd places, this is NOT even decent evidence. I highly doubt any of it is true, although there ARE all kinds of cool things that you can do with this code alternitively. Like, for example, if you have the right code you can actually tour around a BETA version of Kakariko Village. This is pretty much pointless, but fun and cool nonetheless.

Um, he's MEANT to throw up green on a grey cartrige. The throws up red on gold, right? By the way, a few days ago I saw a GOLD_CARTRIGE of Zelda64 in Electronics Boutique, but unfortunatly, I was with my aunt and not my dad. Had I have gone with my dad, I'm sure he would have gotten it for me. My aunt, however, did not. >_< Maybe next time. This is the exact same way I got my Gameshark. ^_^ Oh, and to you girls and boys who find the idea creepy...It IS! It is SO creepy, but it's really cool, in spite of it's eerie-ness. :)

I have found that just before the final battle with gandorf (which of when your running down the collapsing castle) that when your near the bottom you can jump off the side and not respawn at the top. Doing this will lead to zelda dieing. There is no zelda at the end of the game. So when you go to retrieve your master sword she will not be there. Also between the 3 versions of the game many of my friends said there is a different scene just after you reach the bottom of the falling castle. When gandorf rises from the debree of the castle and his eyes are glowing he either transforms into gannon or what my friends have said gannon kills gandorf from behind. (After all it says it's Gannons castle not gandorfs.)
