Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back Easter Egg - Got a Cigarette?

As Chewbacca assembles a dismembered C-3PO, the protocol droid blurts out "...got a cigarette". Although the line is slightly garbled, I believe this to be a reference to the Star Wars anti-smoking commercial (first aired sometime after "A New Hope") starring C-3PO and R2-D2, where the latter finds a cigarette and C-3PO talks about the health risks of smoking.

That's funny, because Anthony Daniels (the actor who played C-3PO) was a smoker. There's a funny picture I saw somewhere of Daniels on the set smoking while in his C-3PO costume, because it took too long to take the costume off and put it back on after breaks.

You may be right on him being a smoker, but if you're just guessing because of the picture you saw, you may be wrong. I remember a picture of him in the costume, with a STRAW hanging out-- the caption spoke of drinking a LOT through straws because of the heat in the Tunisia desert. Maybe the pic you saw was a different one, with a cigarette hanging out and a 40oz bottle of Schlitz in his hand???

As if anyone ever remembered a anti-smoking campaign headed by C3PO and R2D2. HOW could C3PO asking for a cigarette in the movie parallel an ANTI-smoking ad?

They probably garbled up sound bytes from Daniels on screen and off, maybe he asked for a cigarette between scenes?

I'm afraid I'm going to have to completely disagree on this one. While Chewie is fixing him, all of C-3PO's dialogue was taken from earlier in the movie before he gets blasted to pieces. What he's saying is something along the lines of, "I'm terribly sorry, didn't mean to intrude, please don't get up, DON'T!" The first coherent thing he says after Chewie finally adjusts his settings correctly is something like, "Stormtroopers? I must warn the others. Oh no, I've been shot!"

I think you're wrong. He says "Terribly sorry...(blah)...no please don't", then Chewie turns him off, and when he's turned back on he says "...Won't tell a secret! Stormtroopers? Here? We're in danger. I must..." and so on. The point is, he says "...won't tell a secret!" not "...got a cigarette?"

Wow, it *does* sound like it. I'm not certain that he actually says it, but it sounds like it very well could be.

Er... No. This easter egg is horribly wrong. I didn't even have to listen carefully and it sounded nothing like "got a cigarette?" The first comment is right, he says something about keeping a secret, because it's what he said/would have said while he was being shot.

This is just a small fact but in episode two in the beginning city when Obiwan is in that bar with Anikin, he sees a man and asks "Want a smoke?" and obiwan says "smoke aren't good" or something and he repeats it.
