Godfather, The Easter Egg - Face on Pacino's Jacket

In the scene at Don Corleono's funeral, at the cemetary. Michael(Al Pacino) stands up to talk to Tesio. As Michael stands, you can notice a face reflecting on his jacket. it also appears when he sits down. I don't know who it is, or if it is a reflection but it is very interesting.

I'm pretty sure the reflection belongs to Tom Hagen's wife (I can't think of her name).

I have just checked this one out however Toms' wife (Teresea) is sitting behind him at the funeral, so the face on the jacket cannot be hers.

It is Don Corleone's wife's face. Sun glare made it reflect on the camera.

Yes! I noticed that too. I had to rewind it and watch it again. I thought it was a glitch in my tape or possibly a ghostly figure(oooohhhh)... kinda like in "3 Men & a Baby"

I've noticed this too. It freaked me out every time. I've looked into it some, and found no "official" explanation. When the Godfather comes out on DVD sometime this winter (an event I look highly forward to), I feel sure we can see some mention of it. If not, then forever in my mind shall Al Pacino's Right Pec be haunted. Hehe, kidding...

Roger Ebert answered this on his web-page - "Before Michael stands up, you can see a glare on the lens, but it is not discernible as a face because it is on a white background. When Michael shifts, so that his suit provides a dark contrast, the glare depicts the face of his mother, who in the scene immediately preceding is seated next to him. Presumably, the actors remained in place for the closeup shot of Michael (Coppola mentioned the shots were done in a hurry), and what we are seeing is a fluke of light, distortion, shadow and lens peculiarity; the flared edge of the lens picks up the light from just out of the frame".

The face is not only visible against his jacket in the shots where they are all seated, but throughout the entire scene itself. I'd noticed it while watching the DVD on my computer, and then we ran it through the projector onto a screen, and you can see bits of the red reflection against darker colors throughout camera changes :/
