Coraline Easter Egg - Ranft Brothers Moving Van

Within the first couple of scenes in the movie, there is an establishing shot of the "Pink Palace Apartments" house. There's a moving van outside with the name "Ranft Bros. Moving" on the side of the van.

Jerome Ranft is a sculpture who has worked for Pixar (among other studios).

Joe Ranft, his brother, was an animator for Disney, and later, Pixar; He is probably best known for his voice work in Disney/Pixar's "Bug's Life" as Heimlich the Caterpillar, and "Wheezy the Penguin" in "Toy Story 2."

You can see a mover with really short hair/balding in the drivers side; I believe this mover is based on Jerome.

There's a following shot, which Coraline's mother hands the other mover a small tip. I believe the mover on the porch is modeled after Joe (based on the pictures of him that I've seen).

Joe Ranft passed away in August 2005, so I thought this was a nice little tribute, especially to Joe.

The mover at the front door (who gets a one dollar tip) is in fact modeled Joe Ranft. While at Pixar, Joe was a storyboard artist and story supervisor, working on every Pixar film. He also co-directed Cars with John Lasseter, and the movie is dedicated to Ranft. There are additional photos of the Ranft brother movers, as well as other characters from the movie, at Damon Bard's website. Bard was a character designer/sculptor for the movie. Here is a link to his gallery: http://www.bardsculpturestudio.com/portfolio/Sculpture/2 Definitely a nice tribute to the late Joe Ranft.
