Correction: The U.S.S. Yorktown was originally going to be the name of the Enterprise-A, before Star Trek IV.

Un-correction: According to my memory of Steven Whitfield's "The Making of Star Trek" the early working name for Enterprise in the mid 60's was Yorktown. I can't find my copy to verify this.

I remember watching an ep of either TNG or DS9 where someone said something like "You should visit the Yorktown, they've got..." I forget the name of the ep or what is so special about the Yorktown.

How is this an easter egg? I've heard the Yorktown mentioned in many episodes of TNG (none of which I can name offhand, before you ask).

I do not know if this is why, but the 'Enterprise', 'Yorktown', 'Yamato', and also the 'Repulse' in ST2:Khan(I think) are all names of battleships and aircraft carriers used by the US, Great Britain and Japan in the Pacific theatre of World War II. The Enterprise and Yorktown were US carriers, the Repulse was a British battleship and the Yamato was the largest battleship every built, a last-ditch effort at the end of the war by the Japanese. Japanese movies have regularly included the 'Yamato' name and it would not surprise me if ST:TOS has other WWII references.

In ST2 the ship was the Reliant. And according to Mr. Scott's guild to the Enterprise, the name of the Enterprise-A was the Ti-Ho.

The Yorktown was also referred to in Star Trek 4 : The Voyage Home. It is near the beginning when the unknown life form is messing up power on the planet along with weather.

I believe in one of the original Star Trek series, the Yorktown is destroyed by a battle computer fitted aboard the Enterprise.

Now more famous due to the movie of the same name, there is a shoppe named All Good Things...located in Yorktown (Heights), NY. makes it more of an egg now, assuming writer's intent, of course.
