Baldur's Gate Easter Egg - Biff the Understudy

Let me preface this by saying that while this isn't a cheat as Biff is just a run of the mill character and not a super being or anything like that, it does requires access to the cheats. This is easy to acheive

Open the file Baldur.ini in your Baldur's Gate directory and add the line Cheats=1 under the [Game Options] entry. Then save the file and run the game.

Once in the game, hit Ctrl-Tab to bring up the console in which you type the cheats. Ctrl-Tab will also close this console. Type in the cheats exactly as they appear below and hit the [Enter] key to activate.

Biff is a secret character I found by accident. Basically I had just managed to escape the catacombs under the Library with my life and had lost Khalid, one half of the Khalid/Jaheira duo. I wanted him back so I used a cheat code to summon him and low and went to talk to him. He started to repeat the initial greeting from when you first meet him, which is a conversation between you, Khalid and Jaheira.

Since Jaheira is already in your party and you didn't summon her, Biff the understudy (I assume meaning he is an understudy to Khalid or Jaheira as this works if you summon Jaheira instead of Khalid) appears and takes up Jaheira's part of the conversation. If you accept him as part of your party Biff will join too. This will work pretty much anywhere even if you already have Jaheira and Khalid in your party.

BTW the code CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("Khalid") will create Khalid. You can put the name of almost any character in place of Khalid to summon that character but this is what you need to see the egg.

You do not need to use cheats to meet Biff the Understudy, or even get him to join your party. I managed to once by travelling to Baldur's Gate with the evil bard fellow you meet in one of the forests (forgot his name). He wants you to rescue his girlfriend from her father (Entar Silvershield, I think). But if you kill his girlfriend (upstairs) before you allow the bard to speak to her, Biff the Understudy comes along instead, and offers to join your party in place of the just-killed girlfriend. -v`

*BS*. Biff the Understudy was created to replace 'errors' when trying to talk or interact with vital creatures. Some creatures are vital to the storyline and must be talked to or interacted with. Since some of these creatures can be killed or be removed from the game before you get a chance to talk/interact with them, Biff takes their place and plays their part. It's not an egg, it's a smart bug-fix by the guys from Baldur's Gate.

You don't need to CHEAT to have Biff the Understudy appear. I found this out while demonstrating to a friend the ability of mass destruction with oil flasks. I was in Duchal Palace up the back where the two Dukes and Sarevok couldn't see me. I did a few leasurely fire bomb attacks wiping out the Noblemen and then both the Dukes. I was thinking the Noblemen would turn into the Dopplegangers but alas they didn't. So they all died. Now for the fun part, I walk in viewing of Sarevok to see aproximately 7, yes 7 Biff the Understudies waiting next to him. Each one was a different critical plot character I had killed. Such as all the noblemen and the two dukes. and after all the Biff's had finished talking (I had no clue which one said what!) all hell broke loose.

1. If you give Viconia [in either Larswood or Peldvale] I think Biff will appear. 2. If you use the cheat CLUAConsole:CreateCreature('Belt') or CLUAConsole:CreateCreature('Liia'), millions of Biffs will appear.

Daniel - please clarify something: What do you mean by 'giving' Viconia? I want to meet Biff, I don't want to use cheats and I have Viconia in my party and can reload to just before I picked her up. Mailing me or replying on the comments sheet would be much appreciated. God bless.

Well, from what I hear, if you kill the flaming fist mercenary attacking Viconia before speaking to her for the first time, Biff will take his place.

Biff the understudy can also been found if after you have been charged with the murder of the iron throne leaders, you go to the first cloakwood area. If you haven't talked to the merchant outside the hunting lodge before biff will appear

I got Biff in the thieves' guild in Baldur's Gate. I had completed a task for them and their wizard attacked me. I killed him and later Biff appeared in his place during another conversation with the guild leader.

I found Biff in Baldur's Gate (City) after talking to the kid above the Lady's House Temple. I followed into his house and when in there I talked to him again and it was the same conversation as before, he left, I talked to his father and since the kid was invovled in the conversation, Biff appeared. Beyond Cool (the egotistical bloke who says it's a bug-fix) is right. PS BG rrrrrrrooooooooooqqqqqqqqssssssss!!!!!!!!!!

Um, if you just looked at Biff's title: "Understudy" It doesn't take a genius to realize exactly what beyond cool pointed out: Biff's just a way for glitches to be fixed in the case of trigger happy players knocking off important NPCs. Hence, "Understudy."

Biff The Understudy makes an appearance in BG 2 as well. You can find him giving an EXTREMELY bad performance as an actor in the Flaming Flagons Inn, in the "Bridge" section of Athkatla :-)

Biff The Understudy will take the place of any character in the game who is needed for critical dialogue that the player must see. You do not need to use cheats, but they make it easier.

Well, I summoned Elminster, CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("elmins") and he talked to me about being in a illusion. Then Biff appeared and he assumed the role of Gorion. I know that because he said his, "You must learn to be patient child!". Cool, eh?

An easier way to do this is in Baldurs Gate, when you meet a woman who has lost her daughter. Coran (the elf fighter/thief) is involved in this conversation if you have him in your party (I won't say how to avoid spoiling it for anyone) and if you put him in a house before talking to the woman then you get Biff the Understudy to come and say his lines for him.

While installing it(I just now remembered where I put my copies), I noticed files with the .bif extension being copied. Possibly that is how they got the name Biff. For sure? I don't know.
