Mallrats Easter Egg - Same Story

The girl says that a girls' feelings were hurt when a comment about her weight was made. She says that she immediately went to the YMCA and started to doing laps and in the middle of some lap she burst a tube in her brain and died.

Now, in Clerks, the EXACT same story is told by the video store owner to Dante.

yes, the story is the same, but it's done on purpose...in "clerks" they talk about the girl who died in the pool (from "mall rats), and in "chasing amy" (another kevin smith movie) they talk about the girl who did the nasty with the dead guy (from "clerks")...p.s. watch "chasing amy" if you're interested in silent bob!

It actually makes sense that the dead girl would be repeatedly metioned: since the movies are in a similar time frame and in the same area. Wouldn't you talk about it if some girl you knew died of an embolism? Some other parallels (I'm not going to drive myself crazy remembering all the characters' exact names so sue me.): the bodybuilder chewing out Dante in Clerks was one of the guys involved in the infamous "fingercuffs" anecdote in Chasing Amy. And Trish "the Dish" Jones in Mallrats and Alyssa Jones in Chasing Amy are sisters: aside from the last anme there are several clues in the Jay & Silent Bob comic, including a family portrait (next to a photo of Brody as talk show host.)

Also, Heather Jones in Clerks (the girl that ends up going off with Rick Derris) is Alyssa's sister, this is even mentioned in the dialogue. Rick Derris is also sitting next to Alyssa and Holden in the hockey match ("even I knew what you were getting at!"). Also during Alyssa's tirade against Holden outside said hockey match, she mentions a whole slew of characters from the other films (including Shannon Hamilton and Gwen Taylor, who are played by Ben Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams respectively). There are other eggs, but this comment is getting a bit long already...

Don't forget, the girl who played Heather Jones in Clerks also appears as the girl on the elevator scene in Dogma. She is the person who spits out the coffee when Matt Damon says he wants to kill people. Her name is Kim Loughran or close to that. She works for View Askew productions in Red Bank, N.J., a nice place to visit, and you would probably like to live there too. DOGMA RULES!!!!!

If you're a real geek (uhh, like me) and you own the laserdisc of Chasing Amy, Kevin Smith lays out the trilogy's time line in the liner notes: Julie Dwyer dies in the YMCA swimming pool around midnight Thursday, Mallrats occurs on Friday, Clerks occurs on Saturday, and Chasing Amy occurs two years after Clerks.

Rick Derris (the guy at the counter with Heather Jones in Clerks and at the hockey game in Chasing Amy) is the guy that Gwen had sex with on a pool table at a costume party (dressed as Burt Reynolds) in Mallrats.

It's really interesting that according to the timeline Jay and Silent Bob are at two places at once -- because in Dogma they are playing prophets that are sent to help Bethany.. Pretty damn interesting if you ask me.

Jay and Bob are NOT at the same place at the same time. In Mallrats, the girl in the pool died the other night. In Clerks, they went to the girl's funeral, therefore whe must have been dead for a couple days if the last showing of the funeral was that day. Therefore, Clerks and Mallrats took place on different days. Mallrats actually happens earlier.

I thought everybody knew that Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma were interconnected. If you pay attention to all of them, you will hear either the same story mentioned in another movie, or they will talk about the characters of another of the movies.

And if you have bothered to read this far into the coments the clerks and Jay and Silent Bob comic books tie into the timeline including the scene not filmed for clearks (The funeral) I'll give you a hint keyhole....

Just to be boring ... They mention the girl who died in the pool in chasing amy too ! What I can't quite peg is exactly when Dogma fits into the timeline ... It looks like its around Chasing Amy ....

Dogma is not too long after Chasing Amy. At the end, or, near the end of Chasing Amy. Jay and Silent Bob say they have to catch a bus to Chicago... which is when Dogma starts up... practically.

Ya, just a little information on everything here, all of these movies kind of chronicle Jay & Silent Bob. You can learn more about them with a Jay & Silent Bob mini-series comic book, it takes place between Chasing Amy & Dogma, basically how they got there. If anyone's seen Scream 3, they are in that too, they were touring the Hollywood studio & Jay said something when Courtney Cox's character walked by. Most people probobly thought they were just obnoxious fans, but if you like them, its a fun little thing. Post 'em if ya got 'em!

Does anyone know what happened to Suzanne the monkey from the end of Mallrats???? BTW I LOVE KEVIN SMITH!!!!!!!

JPazk writes:
About the monkey..... Kevin Smith is writing a commentary about the making of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, called Developing the monkey. Why is it called that you ask? Because Smith was told to develop the monkey's character in the movie. This might bring some closure to the Mallrats monkey storyline (if it can even be called that). However, from what I've read, J&SBSB is going to be very similar to Mallrats, which should make for an interesting movie.

Suzanne the monkey plays a major role in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (the Fifth Kevin Smith film) so the monkey must live with them or something, he/she is in Mallrats at the end and in J&SBSB, so they must leave it at home while they do some crazy ass sh*t

In Chasing Amy, Alyssa mentions that she hasn't gone back to the old neighborhood since her friends funeral and Holden says "The quick stop girl died?", Alyssa replys "No Julie Dwyer, she-" Holden cuts her off and says "YMCA Pool! You knew that girl?" Alyssa says "So well!" So its tied into all the Smith moves that were tied to New Jersey minus Dogma.

As being a avid watcher of Kevin Smith films, Julie Dyler dies on Thursday at around 12. Mallrats takes place on Friday. Clerks takes place on Sat. And Chasing Amy takes place the next week. Dogma must fall in about during and after Chasing Amy. And the Scream3 cameo might have something to do with J&SB Strike Back, as they are in Hollywood.
